Utilizing our deep expertise in developing and supporting volunteer-led campaigns, NEAT recently helped Freedom Oklahoma launch a Virtual Field Team so their volunteers can fight in-state and nationwide for LGBTQ2S+** equality.

Freedom Oklahoma is a statewide organization working to secure lived equality and legal protection for LGBTQ2S+ people. They rely heavily on the participation of volunteers across the state to advocate and engage in the civic process. They knew they needed a virtual platform for people to come together and advocate for what is important to them and their loved ones because so often the Oklahoma Legislature tries to push legislation that is harmful to LGBTQ2S+ Oklahomans. With NEAT's experience building virtual field teams and running virtual campaigns, it was a natural partnership.

“Working with NEAT has been amazing,” said Taylor Raye, Youth Organizer at Freedom Oklahoma. “Being able to build a Virtual Field Team with a structure that is already in place not only helps with our capacity, but creates a more streamlined effort for all those involved. NEAT has provided support, feedback, ways to improve, and so much more. We especially like the feature that allows our members to sign up for other campaigns through other organizations. We cannot always accommodate every person's schedule, and NEAT has created an easy way for our constituents to engage no matter what.”

After having such a positive experience with the launch of the Virtual Field Team, Freedom Oklahoma is hoping to continue with this structure in the future as a way to engage with communities who need their support. Oklahoma legislators have shown that they can, and will, push through legislation that is extremely harmful to the livelihood of LGBTQ2S+ Oklahomans. With a Virtual Field Team in place, the organization will have the ability to act swiftly to try and stop those legislative acts from passing.

With the proliferation of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state legislatures throughout the country, the creation of a Virtual Field Team could be a great resource for empowering volunteers to advocate for change in their communities. Taylor added “To partner with NEAT on the creation of a Virtual Field Team is an opportunity to increase your capacity without increasing your workload. Having the support and knowledge of NEAT made our process so much better, and I would imagine it would be the same for any other organization looking to start a Virtual Field Team!”
