National Equality Action Team (NEAT) will be hosting a Virtual Town Hall at 7pm ET / 4pm PT the day after the 11th Circuit Court decision regarding the so-called “conversion therapy” case in which two therapists in South Florida have challenged local laws that prohibit them from practicing this dangerous and discredited practice. Being gay or bisexual is not a mental illness, and should never be treated as if it is.
Join our panel of experts from National Center for Lesbian Rights, Equality Florida, and others as we discuss the decision and exactly how LGBTQ+ people in the 11th Circuit (Florida, Georgia, and Alabama) will be affected, as well as our next steps in this effort.
Already banned in 20 states, conversion therapy is the practice of trying to change an individual's sexual orientation from gay or bisexual to straight using psychological or spiritual interventions. All of the nation’s leading professional medical and mental health associations have rejected conversion therapy as ineffective and dangerous, warning that the practices do not work and that patients may be harmed in the process. Instead, they suggest that patients and their loved ones seek therapy, social support, and educational resources that provide accurate care and information on sexuality and sexual orientation. By doing so, LGBTQ+ children can be taught self-acceptance and learn vial tools so that they may thrive.
The Court doesn't give advance notice so we won't know the exact date for the Town Hall until the decision is announced. So be sure to rsvp here to receive updates as they come in from the Court. Participants will have time for Q&A and a recording will be provided for those who sign up.
